Force

To prepare for our field trip to the Discovery Museum; we learned about force.  Force is a push or pull causing movement. One type of force we focused on was Magnetic force. We started by sharing our schema and everything we already know about magnets.  We explored different magnets and experimented with different materials to see what is magnetic, like iron, and what is not magnetic. Mr. Musselman came to our class to do a magnet show.

Tens & Ones

In math, we've been decomposing numbers 11 to 19. Students are learning how numbers are broken up into different place values, such as tens and ones.  The number 13 is broken up into 1 group of ten and 3 ones or 13=10+3. 

Digraphs

Ask your child "What's a digraph?" 

The answer: "A digraph is 2 letters that STICK together to create a whole new sound!"

We will continue to teach and practice sounding out and spelling words with digraphs over the next several weeks.  

To reinforce our learning, Ms. Keefe and I decided a little healthy competition never hurt anyone. So, we performed a short digraph battle and it was a tie!! We will have to hold a rematch!

Writing Share

Our next share is focused on writing. When your child is first, they will share a piece of their writing. Students ask for questions, comments, and connections about their friend's writing to provide feedback. The students are working on writing a complete story. The story should have a beginning, middle, and end. If their piece of writing is not complete, we ask them to work on finishing their piece the following day. We've heard some narrative stories about our families as well as fiction stories about Star Wars! The best part is that students get to wear an author hat!

Sight Words
Next week we will learn our FINAL 5 sight words...WOOHOO!! After vacation we will individualize your child's sight word cards to their needs.  This means we will send home your child's completed cards. (These are the ones with 3 checkmarks.) The completed cards will be sent home to keep in a rubber-band. The cards without 3 checkmarks will stay on your child's sight word book to be practiced each week and assessed on Fridays until all the words have been learned. We will spend the rest of the year reviewing. Thank you SO much for helping your child learn their sight words. We appreciate it greatly! 

Discovery Museum

To culminate our unit on force; we traveled to the Discovery Museum. Thank you to our chaperones for helping out on our trip. The kids were excited and engage throughout the trip. Here are some of our highlights:
