Looking to get the wiggles out on your snow day?
Here is this week's shake break: Penguin Attention!

Our Week in Review...

Morning Meeting:
-Subtraction Greeting-Students greeted a friend by answering a subtraction problem.
-We reviewed rules about being kind, respectful, and good listeners.
-Every morning we ask students to find and circle the sight words. They are great detectives!

Fundations:
-We are continuing to learn 5 additional sight words a week.
-Ask about our sight word cheers. They are fun and silly ways to spell and read sight words!
-Next week's tic-tac-toe boards will include our first 5 sight words to practice with your child each night.
-Tapping/sounding out words are consistent throughout our daily activities and centers.
-We've also reviewed the uppercase letters: I, J, K, L

Centers/Guided Reading
-Centers are independent reinforcement activities to be completed when the students are not in a reading group.
-Our week's centers were: sight word games, CVC puzzles, Roll a CVC word, Fundations, Writing around the room, read to self, Raz-Kids, and decorating Valentine's Day bags!
-In reading groups we are continuing to use our "eagle eye" to identify unknown words. I am very proud of their hard work!

Math:
-We are continuing to learn about addition and subtraction.
-Topic 9 will focus on composing and decomposing numbers.
-We will learn to compose, or put 2 numbers together, to make numbers through 10.
-We will also decompose, or take a number apart, to make 2 numbers with the same total.
-There is more than one way to show a number:

4=1+3
4=0+4
4=2+2

The total number is always 4.

Looking Ahead...

Only one more week left before February Vacation and it's filled with a ton of fun activities and celebrations!

Magnet Show!

Mr. Musselman, from the science center, will be coming to our school on Wednesday. He will be sharing his knowledge of magnets with us!

100th Day!

-Even though Thursday will technically be our 99th day of school (because of Friday's snow day) we will still celebrate it as our 100th day as to not overlap with our Valentine's Day celebration.
-Please send in capes on Thursday. Students will be wearing their capes mid-morning, during our math time, so please pack capes in a separate bag with their name on it. *Do not wear capes to school.*

-Friday is our Valentine's Day celebration. This means we will have Valentine's Day themed activities, exchange valentines, and a special snack!
-Our special snack will be "A Party in a Bag". Bags will be provided for your child and go home Monday with directions.
-Below are the instructions/handout, which will be attached to the bags.

Dear Families:

On Friday, February 12th, we invite you to send your child to school with a “party in a bag.” Please provide your child with a special and fun snack or treat that he/she can enjoy while we celebrate Valentine’s Day! Please put your child’s snack inside the white paper bag your child brought home from school.

Please remember that the snack must be nut-free.

Thank you!

February “Yard Sale!”
     The Fifth Grade Kindness Committee is  working on a fundraiser which will benefit the World Wildlife Federation. This isn't an actual yard sale. The Kindness Committee borrowed the idea.  Regular yard sales are held on a sunny day, outside, and on someone’s front lawn. The only difference our “yard sale” has is that we will be doing it in the cafeteria and it will be the middle of winter. The way this will work is that kids will bring in money, and for each dollar they donate they get a ticket. On Friday, February 12th, the kids will turn in their tickets and get toys, games, books, clothes, and school supplies in exchange. Doing this will help the Amur Leopard, a leopard that is being hunted down for its soft skin. There are 50 or more left in the wild. Today, there are lots of endangered animals in the world. Bring in money, and we will help other animals and you can get something good too!
