Heroes

Not all heroes wear capes...In fact, we learned that heroes are just like us!

After reading to various read alouds, we brainstormed a list of what is a hero. The students provided a ton of adjectives and examples of everyday heroes. Below are some writing samples of who are heroes are in our lives:

Mrs. Johnson held a Heroes assembly. She introduced two everyday heroes in our community and awarded them with a certificate. Each grade was responsible for learning about heroes and preparing a short piece to share with our Fox Hill community. Kindergarten prepared a song and dance for our assembly. Check it out!

Fundations

We did it!

We learned all 26 lowercase letters of the alphabet. Starting next week we will begin to "Tap" out or sound out CVC words (ie: cat, sip, run) A packet of information will be sent home Monday on Tapping. We will quickly reinforce the uppercase letters of the alphabet too. Please continue to encourage your child to write in lowercase letters and sound out their words when writing.

*Ms. Beauchesne has taught us all of the signs for the letters and the keywords. Ask your child if they can sign their name!*

Sight Words

Above is a picture of our classroom word wall. We've added 10 words to our word wall. These are the ten words your child has been practicing in school and at home. On Fridays we play our fanfare music and march over to the word wall to add our new words to the wall. It's a celebration of all their hard word! We've seen such growth and progress in their sight word recognition and appreciate your help at home!

Please remember these sight words need to be returned every FRIDAY in order for us to assess and add your child's new words for the following week!

Addition & Subtraction

Our greeting during morning meeting this week was solve an addition problem and use the sum to say good morning to a friend. We will continue to practice our addition fluency throughout the year. This week we introduced subtraction. We want students to know subtraction as taking apart a quantity from a whole. We practiced crossing out objects to show they are being taken away. We also learned to use the minus sign.

Teacher Talk. . .

Scoop Rockers!

Room 5 is LOVING our newest seats for the rug and center time. They're called Scoop Rockers! Students are able to rocker back and forth and sit more comfortably on the rug. They're perfect for greater focus and engagement during teacher directed lessons. Students are excited to read in the scoop rockers too!

Report Cards

Report Cards will go home Monday, January 23rd. They will be sent home in your child's backpack. The report card is yours to keep but the blue folder must be returned at your earliest convenience. Please keep in mind the report card is standardize based and is set as a benchmark to be met by the end of the school year. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to me. We will have an option for a second conference in the spring, just so you are aware.

Mystery Reader

If you have not returned your mystery reader sign-up please return it by Friday, January 27th. Volunteers do not need a CORI and/or confidentiality meeting requirement as they will be in the classroom for a short period of time under teacher supervision. If you are interested in signing up but do not see a date/time preferable, please let me know. I would love to give everyone an opportunity to come to our classroom.

I am finalizing the list and schedule for parents and families and hope to send home with your child on Friday, January 27th or Monday January 30th.

Star Student Shares

Our student shares continues this week with the following students pictured below. I am so proud of our class's ability to produce such a variety of adjectives. This week we heard peaceful, crafty, intelligent, organized, and much more! Next round of shares will integrate our writing unit on procedures! Look out for more information in your child's folder next week.

Indoor Recess Fun!

On those chilly "white" days we stay inside for recess. Students can choose to paint, build with blocks, kitchen area, read, color, puzzles and games!

Emergent Readers

Out emergent readers facilitate our shared readings in class. The students practice early reading skills and expression. Our Emergent reader this week was another Non-Fiction story about Martin Luther King Jr. Nonfiction can be more difficult and less predictable text, but the students are up for the challenge!! Check out this week's brave volunteers!
