Comparing Stories

This week we read different versions of the tale The Mitten

After reading each story we used a Venn-Diagram to compare characters. We are getting very good at comparing stories and finding how they are similar and different! 

Hedgie!!

Ms. Pavlicek came to Fox Hill to teach us about Mammals. She taught us that there are certain characteristics which make a mammal, a mammal. We have a backbone, we breathe with our lungs, we have hair or fur, we have live babies, and live on land or in water. She also sequenced the characters from The Mitten. At the end of her presentation she brought out one of Jan Brett's (a favorite Kindergarten Author) favorite animals...a HEDGEHOG!!! 

The kids got a chance to watch him run around and pet him too!! Check out some photos:

A Hedgehog can do 3 things: Curl up in a ball, make noises, or use it's quills 

Sight Words & Guided Reading

Our first week of Sight Words and Guided Reading has been very successful!! 

The students were introduced to their first five words and our new daily routines.  One of our favorites is Thursday, when we pretend we are on a game show and color in our sight word grids! I even play the Family Feud song!! Friday we added our words to our word wall and checked in with students. Everyone was able to read and spell their first sight words!! What an accomplishment! Thank you parents for working with your child on these words each night. An understanding of these words plays an intricate part in their reading and writing growth.   

I hope you are enjoying the Take-Home Books your child has been taking home this week. The students are working hard to use their "Eagle Eye" to use the pictures on the page to help them figure out unknown words.  The books sent home are read and practiced in school. Therefore, your child should be familiar with the text and be able to read it with little assistance. Please remember to return your child's book every night with their book card.

Emergent Readers Brave Volunteers:

Addition

In math, we wrapped up our unit on addition. The students can join groups together to tell how many in all.  To culminate our unit, we made addition snowman. If you notice the buttons are show different ways to make 10. In a few weeks we will begin to practice our addition facts and develop our fluency and quickness in which we answer simple math facts. You will receive more information about our math fluency facts once we've completed our sight words. Our next unit will focus on subtraction. 

Teacher Talk. . .

Star Students!

We are continuing to use adjectives to describe our star students.  The students are using words such as stylish, generous, friendly, funny, and flexible to describe one another. Our classroom community grows stronger and stronger! 

Patience

Ms. Greene came to our class to continue her lesson on waiting.  She focused on patience.  Patience is waiting with a calm body. She showed a video featuring Elmo, who had to learn how to be patient to play basketball with a friend. The students practiced how to be patient in line and on the rug.  When we are patient we get to favorable activities quicker than when we wait with an excited body.
