Sequencing
Room 5 loves "There was an old lady..." books. If you haven't checked them out yet, please do! They are funny and whimsically written, each with their own holiday theme. This week we read There was an old lady who swallowed a Rose.
After reading the story, students were asked to sequence the order in which the events happened. This required students to really concentrate on the storyline and understand what came first, second, and so on. We will continue to talk about sequencing, a reading comprehension skill, during our read alouds.
Sight Words
We learned 5 new sight words this week. Bringing our grand total to 20 words learned thus far. Please check your child's sight word cards for checkmarks. Once your child has received three checkmarks they are considered mastery and will no longer be assessed on the word. In anticipation for your snow storm, we completed our sight word grids on Wednesday. This was the first week we completed the grids in a small group rather than a whole group. The students received their own sight word grid, read the word, and color-coded the words accordingly. Look out for these grids every Thursday. Here are some pictures of us in action:
Addition & Subtraction Fluency
As a culmination to our addition and subtraction units; we began our unit on fluency. Fluency is the ability to answer or read with speed and accuracy. To help achieve fluency in addition and subtraction we will be ending each math lesson with an exit ticket. An exit ticket is a simple math worksheet with 10 problems, both addition and subtraction, in which students have to complete in a short amount of time without help. I will start to send home these exit tickets next week for you to see your child's progress. After we have completed our math unit on addition and subtraction fluency we will send home some flashcards for you to practice with your child. You can certainly start at home before the cards arrive these are simple addition and subtraction problems 0-5.

Snow Day Scheduling
Snow days can be bring challenges in our routines and schedules. It requires students and teachers to be flexible. We may have to restructure our day and it's happenings. Our week's snow day and delay created quite a few changes in our day as well as our upcoming week's events. Read below to find out more.
Valentine's Day
We will still celebrate Valentine's Day on Tuesday, February 14th. We will eat our special snack during our regularly scheduled snack time. These special snacks should be packed in your child's Party in a Bag. Please pack a peanut free snack for your child to enjoy. We will open valentines in the afternoon. Please send in your child's valentines at any time! Our Valentine's Day bags are ready to be filled!!
100th Day
Our 100th day celebration will be held on Friday, February 17th. We will wear our capes and complete 100th day activities on Friday instead of Thursday. Capes are still due on Monday, February 13th.
Helpful Hints:
- Using a safety pin to attach your child's 100 items instead of glue.
-You can also use Velcro to attach items.
- There is already Velcro attached at the neck for students to wear. You do not need to worry about how the capes will be worn or adding additional string to tie.

Class Reward
Our class has earned another class reward! The students voted and decided they would like a stuffed animal-Movie day! We will plan for these reward for the Thursday, February 16th. Students can bring a stuffed animal of their choice to school and we will watch a short movie in the afternoon. A notice will be sent home next week with more details.
