Seuss-tastic Week!

Read Across America Week
We've had a spirited week! The students wore crazy colorful socks, wacky hair-dos, and even tried green eggs and ham. We read many Dr. Seuss books throughout the week and found tons of rhyming words. Dr. Seuss's books can be tongue twisting, but we love them! Check out some photos from our week:

Electricity Show 
The Science Center's Mr. Musselman and Ms. P came to Fox Hill for an all school assembly on Electricity. They discussed the difference between conductors and insulators. To show the difference they completed an experiment using various materials and a large police siren light.  They talked about static electricity using balloons. The final experiment included a large model of an electric static generator. Check out the photos and videos from this event.

Spring Conferences

Starting the week of March 27th, we will be offering parent-teacher conferences. These are optional and can be completed over the phone.  We ask that you fill out the sheet sent home on Friday and return no later than March 17th. The sooner you return your requests, the sooner we can confirm dates and times. Once we receive all requests, I will reach out via email to confirm your date and time.  We will do our best to accommodate all requests, but there may be a chance we ask for a second date.  We will discuss academic progress, student work, and even steps for next year. I look forward to speaking with you soon. 

Raz Kids

We are giving more opportunities for students to use raz-kids in the classroom during center time.  Some parents have signed up to receive reports via email on their child's reading progress from the app. You can have your child log onto raz-kids at home from a computer or ipad.  One of my favorite features on Raz-kids is that your child can actually record themselves reading a book for me to listen to. It's a fun way for them to show off their reading and for me to hear their progress! Feel free to check it out.

Mystery Bag Shares

Next week we will begin our new share: Mystery Bag Share! Here's how it works: The day before your child is first, they will come home with our classroom's mystery bag. Inside the bag will be a copy of the directions and a clue sheet.  Please help your child chose an item from home that they would like to share with their classmates. This could be a memento, small toy, picture, or a simple object which they wish to share with the class as long as it fits in the bag comfortably!  Then,  help your child write three clues as to what item they placed in the bag.  Try not to make it TOO obvious! Once your child reads the clues and the class has gotten a chance to take some guesses, your child will have the opportunity to share their item! 

Friendships

Myself and Ms. Greene have talked a lot about friendships, playing with one another, and role playing scenarios that may occur throughout your child's day.  We strive to make sure each and every child is learning, finding a love for school, and building friendships along the way. Our focus, most recently, has been on including everyone and ensuring friends feelings are not hurt.  We want to build a classroom community for all, not just preferential friends.  I hope these are similar conversations you can have with your child at home for reinforcement.  

Coin Drive
The Kindness Committee of the Fifth Grade Student Council is starting a fund raising campaign to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation. The money supports research to treat the disease and find a cure. The committee has several fund raisers planned for the spring. The first is a coin drive that begins Monday, March 6. We have donation bins placed in each pod and one in the school lobby, as well. Today, two of our students made a school-wide announcement about the campaign. We hope you will talk with your child about this worthy cause. Please consider sending your child to school with loose change or a dollar bill to contribute to our fund raiser.
